Firstly I must say that this picture is an eye catcher to begin with. While browsing around I found this picture and for me it was appealing. I must say I like the concept of the fallen solider or the fallen defender. The vibes coming from the gun are a nice touch to tell us the audience he just fired a round. The crows are nice but I do have one minor complaint about the crows. The one is the left corner on the bottom has a wing that seems a bit off. Overall I like the elements of this piece. Most artists simply would of went with shades of red to denote the character was dying or shot however the artist went with more yellow and orange hues which tell me as a viewer that the fight isn't over. Yellow being a color denoting hope and Orange being a color that denotes war and will to me. All in all a very very good piece.
I really love your use of different brushes and texture to make this image pop! The emotion on the gunslinger's face and motion of his pose are stunning. I have to admit, though, that with the same-hue color palette, my eyes are having a hard time distinguishing a focal point, and the same thing with distances: the birds are dark in the foreground, but the same dark tones are used on the gunslinger almost without break of visual line from birds to the figure's shadows. I would suggest fading out his torso to his legs in favor of bringing more depth and attention to his face, as that's where the most expression seems to be. Also, because it seems he's falling, it might help the overall composition to add a bit more space to the bottom of the canvas, as to me it seems a bit cramped, and keeps me from really focusing on his face as the focal point.
Small things aside, I think this is an amazing piece!
As a massive fan of King's Dark Tower series, I must say that you're work has not only brought one of the most enigmatic characters of contemporary fiction to life, but also imbued him with a startling sense of King's trippy reality. Childe Roland to the Dark Tower came, indeed.
