Owls are awesome, and this is a great sketch of one. I love the color overlay on black and the ragged treatment.

Where do you get most of your brushes that you use on pieces like this? They look awesome and create a nice sense of environment. Also, how do you come up with the idea of color that you use on most of your pieces? You seem to really limit colors on some drawings, and they work out amazingly. I see that you used blues for the idea of the dark, but the lighter greenish color in the very background is a color I would have never even thought of/experimented with. It all works so well.

Thanks! Most of the brush work here was hand inked, but the digital brushes I grabbed from various sources and made some on my own. Most of my Brush collection came from Leventep and Adonihs, and I think they offer them up on their DA sites. I use my Pencil tool more than my brush tool so I can get a sharper look.

As far as the colors go, I don't think too much about it. I quickly and instinctively grab a base color that fits my mood and the piece (usually something dull and neutral, then I start searching for colors that might compliment my base. I paint with overlay, and hard light quite a bit, too.
