When you draw from your shoulder you put your whole arm into the action which puts more life into your lines. Drawing from the wrist is great for being precise and detailed but it can also make your lines stiff and clinical.

You really just have to try it out, it's easier to feel it then it is to explain. And the bigger the paper of canvas you're drawing on, the more obvious the results.
