Defenders Issue 5 Digital inking by mbreitweiser Defenders Issue 5 Digital inking by mbreitweiser
Smack in the middle of drawing Defenders issue 5, I decided to switch to an all digital inking style. I'm really pleased with the results, and I'll probably never go back.

Nice! love your style! What paint tool do you use, or what particular tool in Photoshop?

I ink with the pencil tool so I can get a crisp edge. Most of the inking is done with a customized round brush to mimic a #6 round, and a customized chalk brush with a texture to mimic stumbling. I'm still refining my toolset, but maybe I'll post it here someday.

I ink with a #6 kolinsky sable brush, so I try to create a digital brush that mimics the characteristics of my regular brush.

This looks Fantastic! It's a huge plunge to take, but for my own purposes I couldn't be happier with the results of working digitally- both in terms of quality and speed. Can't wait to see what you've got cooking next!

Very cool IMHO. Photoshop, Illustrator, or Manga Studio? Or; none of the above?:)

WHat was the decisive factor in making the permanent jump?

lots of things. Fewer buyers of original art since the economy tanked. It's faster and more flexible. And I've reconciled that digital is the most honest approach to art creation in a world of increasing digital media consumption.

I like your reasoning, and the fact that you don't really pretend it's anything other than digital becoming the most efficient form of delivery for you.

Cool. I love that last panel. Are you fully digital now for your pages? or just short on time?
